What Love Does: The Healing Lessons My Horse Taught Me

When I rescued Stetson in 2012, I believed I was saving him.

However, I didn’t realize he would end up saving me.

He arrived thin, uncertain, and full of stories his body still remembered. Over time, as we worked together, he began to teach me lessons that would change my life—and my approach to healing.

Learning to Listen

Stetson taught me that healing starts with listening.

It isn’t about fixing what’s broken. Instead, it’s about creating safety so the body can speak and feel safe again.

Every movement, every breath, and every pause was his way of saying, “I’m trying.” I promised him I would fight for him as long as he said it was OK.

As I cared for him, I noticed how his body mirrored my own. When he softened, I softened. When he tensed, so did I. This awareness became the foundation of my work and the heart of What Love Does.

Patience as a Form of Medicine

Healing takes time.

It requires patience, trust, and consistency.

Through Stetson, I learned that real progress comes in small, quiet moments—often when we simply stand together and breathe. The focus, present time consciousness, the sound of his breath all were profound moments of clarity for me in that field.

That lesson translates to every patient I see, human or animal. Healing doesn’t happen through force. It happens when the nervous system feels safe enough to let go. Healing happens when an individual feels heard, safe and loved.

Connection Is the Cure

Chiropractic care restores communication. It’s not just about aligning the spine—it’s about reconnecting the body’s signals so the entire system can function freely. Freeing the life force, the sheer energy we are made of, is powerful on so many levels.

With Stetson, I saw how restoring that communication restored confidence, strength, and grace. His transformation showed me what’s possible when we meet pain with compassion and precision. The trust he gave me, the will to keep fighting, the unconditional love….will  never be forgotten.

This is why I approach each adjustment as a conversation, not a correction. Every session is an exchange of trust—between practitioner and patient, human and animal, science and soul. It is the art of asking “can I help you” without ever saying a word. It is an energetic exchange between two beings that gains the most profound results.

The Legacy That Lives On

When Stetson passed away in December 2022, it left a silence I didn’t know how to fill. Yet, his lessons continue to echo through my work. I continue to do what I do in his honor, to ensure his spirit lives on. Stetson was so loved by so many who followed his rescue and then his transport to the United States.

He will always be the heart behind What Love Does.

He taught me that true healing is love in motion—steady, patient, and unconditional.

So whether I’m helping a rider regain balance, a dog move without pain, or a person rediscover comfort in their body, I carry Stetson’s wisdom with me. I carry his strength and determination with me. I will fight for you and your loved ones just as valiantly as I did for Stetson. He would want it no other way.

Because that’s What Love Does—it listens, it restores, and it endures.
